Go for a drive on Blue Ridge Parkway, Charlotte

Sure, the Blue Ridge Parkway is gorgeous and crosses the whole country. My advice is to take I-85 and stop for an afternoon in Asheville, a nice mountain resort, full of arts and crafts. George Vanderbilt's Estate lies there, and his fields are full of streams, noisy waterfalls and green hills. You can have a great picnic, I don't think you have to ask for his permission. The Biltmore Estate is a must-see as well, the largest privately owned castle-house in the US.
