Saylorville Lake located 11 miles from Des Moines is one of the best options. I had a great time there with my mates enjoying the diverse recreational activities such as boating and swimming (most popular there), deer and game bird hunting, biking and disc golf. They also offer camping sites. Around the lake there are Jester Park and Big Creek State Park.
