The Chena River enables canoeing and fishing. The river is safe, don't worry, with mild currents, and you can enter it through the Chena Hot Springs road. The only to avoid in interior Alaska is the Tanana River, with sandbars and swift furious waters. Fishing is better anyway in my view, and the river crossing Fairbanks is a great source for grayling fishing, char and pike.
