Yes, they inspect the baggage with a xray machine and some items are prohibited to be taken to the US mainland. Some of them are gardenia, jade vine or roses, but other fresh flowers are allowed. You can't take fresh fruits and vegetables or fresh coffee berries either, but pineapples and coconuts are ok. You should check with the Quarantine office in the airport, they will give more details.
