Actually I know of a hostel located very close to the shore; on 1436 2nd St. It is called HI-Los Angeles/Santa Monica and it is wedged between the beach and Third Street Promenade. But they only have dorms and a few doubles without bathrooms. :(( They have a kitchen tough and a library and a movie room. A dormitory bed costs up to 31 usd and a room with shared bathroom costs about 70 usd.
