I was a backpacker all my youth, traveling from town to town and sleeping in crammed hostels, heavy-smelling and sleazy...but it all has its charm, especially when you're 20. I remember I stayed at the Chelsea Center Hostel on W, 29th St. and it wasn't ugly at all. They only had 18 beds, but you can ask to be accommodated in a women-only dorm. The small back garden was a blessing...
