Go ahead and try Chelsea Star on 300 W 30th St., I stayed there and everything was smooth. The hotel is quite interesting, European style with private themed rooms (Madame Butterfly or Star Trek for example). The prices are very nice, $80 to 90, but rooms have shared bathrooms. The area is crowdy but safe.
